2011 Competition Dates Released

The competition dates for 2011 are now available to download from the download section of the website. In addition to this, the NTTC would like to clarify a previous announcement regarding the trampoline equipment for 2011.

“The NTTC are discussing, the placement of both 4x4 & 6x4 beds on each panel for the 2011 season of Gala’s. The NTTC has no wish to force 4x4 beds on clubs internally, however clubs wising to compete abroad will encounter these beds. The announcement of the NTTC agreement to use 4x4 beds for all groups appears to have confused members into thinking it will only be 4x4 beds which may not be the case”

We will update you as soon as possible once a decision has been made.

George P. Nissen (01/Feb/1914 – 07/Apr/2010)

George P. Nissen (February 1st 1914 – April 7th 2010) was a gymnast and inventor who developed the forerunner of the modern trampoline making trampolining a worldwide sport. He died in San Diego California on 7th April 2010 at the age of 96 from complications from pneumonia.
Nissen was born in Blairstown Iowa and became a keen gymnast in high school winning a number of gymnastics championships whilst a student He had seen circus trapeze artists use their safety nets as an elastic bed to rebound and perform additional tricks. He thought that this would be a useful training tool for his tumbling. In 1934, Nissen built the prototype trampoline from angle iron with a canvas bed and rubber springs. Nissen used it to help with his training.
During the Second World War the trampoline was used to train pilots by getting them used to orienting themselves in the air. After the war Nissen continued to promote the trampoline and began touring in Europe. Nissen set up a branch plant of his company in Brentwood, Essex in 1956 and manufactured trampolines there for many years. Brentwood still has a thriving trampolining community but no longer a local factory. But by this time other manufacturers had started to make similar equipment and eventually, although the word trampoline was originally a trademark, it became a generic word for rebound apparatus. Nissens company ceased operations in the 1980s.
There is an annual international trampolining competition held in Switzerland called the Nissen Cup.
Nissen had always wanted to have trampolining included in the Olympic Games. This finally happened in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. In 2008, Nissen was able to travel to Beijing to watch the trampoline event at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
All sports friends involved in Trampoline sports will be sad to learn of Georges death and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
